A Richmond lawyer and Naval Reserve officer has been appointed to represent Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged architect of the 9/11 attacks.
The Pentagon assigned solo practitioner Prescott Prince to defend Mohammed in a death penalty case in U.S. war crimes tribunals, according to The Miami Herald. The White House and Congress have set up commissions to try the case.
Prince told the newspaper he believes his client should be tried in traditional civil or military courts.
The newspaper reported that Mohammed has been in U.S. custody for five years and been subjected to waterboarding, an interrogation technique that simulates drowning. Mohammed has allegedly confessed to planning worldwide terror plots for al Qaeda.
Prescott served in Iraq for six months after he was called up to active duty. During his law career he has represented many defendants against criminal charges, including the dealth penalty, he told The Miami Herald. However, he has never been a lead lawyer in a capital case.
