Allen Takes Big Role in Thompson Campaign
George Allen was a potential presidential candidate until losing his Senate seat last year.
Former U.S. Sen. George Allen has signed on as a national co-chairman for Republican Fred Thompson's presidential campaign.
The Thompson campaign announced Allen as part of its national leadership team Monday. Former U.S. Sen. Howard Baker of Tennessee, Thompson's political mentor, will serve as honorary chairman of the campaign. Allen will join former U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham and Liz Cheney, daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, as co-chairs of the Thompson effort.
Thompson, perhaps best known for his role on the television show "Law and Order," represented Tennessee in the Senate from 1994 to 2003. He officially entered the presidential race last month after testing the waters throughout the summer.
Allen, a former Virginia governor, was elected to the Senate in 2000 but lost his bid for re-election last year. Allen had been considered a potential presidential candidate in his own right before losing his Senate seat to Democrat Jim Webb.
Allen becomes the latest prominent Virginia Republican to declare a preference in the crowded presidential field. Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling is serving as state campaign chairman for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore is heading the Virginia effort for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. U.S. Sen. John Warner has endorsed fellow Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

George Allen: The Picture He Would Probably Regret If Anyone Paid Attention to 'The Nation'
This picture is apparently very, very, damning evidence that Senator George “Macaca” Allen is totally 100% racist.
It’s him in 1996… with these guys… who belong to this group… that used to be this other group… that hates black people and loves segregation. So there you are. In news that will surprise upwards of 6 readers, George Allen made friendly with a couple white supremacists. ....

George Allen’s Pal Rep. Virgil Goode Shockingly Corrupt & Bigoted
Published by Jon-David
Representative Goode should check himself, fore’ he wrecks himself. Tragically, this assface used to be a Democrat. Like Senator Coleman, we’re happy to be rid of him.
Corrupt:
In 2005, Goode again faced controversy when a major corporate campaign donor, defense contractor MZM, Inc., was implicated in a bribery scandal that resulted in the criminal conviction and resignation of California congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham. Although Goode insisted that his relations with MZM were motivated solely by his interest in bringing high-paying skilled jobs to his district, in December of that year he donated the $88,000 received in MZM contributions to regional charities.
On July 21, 2006 Richard Berglund a former supervisor of the Martinsville, Va. office of MZM Inc., pleaded guilty to making illegal donations to Goode’s campaign. Court papers indicated that he and MZM owner Mitchell Wade (who previously pleaded guilty) engaged in a scheme to reimburse MZM employees for campaign donations.
Bigoted:
“The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.”
“We need to stop illegal immigration totally and reduce legal immigration and end the diversity visas policy pushed hard by President Clinton and allowing many persons from the Middle East to come to this country,”
“I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America”

Chatting With The Fix: Damage Control Time for Sen. Allen?
Washington Post
Baltimore: Have you read the profile of George Allen in the New Republic? It paints a very ugly picture - especially of his relationships with his siblings. His sister, who wrote a book about life in the Allen family, says George was violently abusive to younger sibs - throwing one brother through a sliding glass door, breaking another brother's collarbone and, my favorite, hitting the sister's boyfriend in the head with a pool cue. When the reporter asked him about his sister's memories, Allen's weird reply was, "Well...she was the youngest. And a girl." I must admit, the whole piece gave me the willies.
The Fix: The piece, which was written by Ryan Lizza, has caused considerable controversy since it hit newsstands last week. Sen. Allen and his closest advisers immediately dismissed the story as a "hit" piece by a liberal magazine.
To me, the most potentially damaging revelations in the story deal with Allen's fondness for the Confederate flag when he was a teenager. The Hotline's "On Call" blog caught up with Allen over the weekend, and he said that as he aged he realized the flag "means different things to different people."
I don't think the New Republic story does any real damage to Allen as he seeks a second term this November. It may, however, raise doubts among some within the Republican chattering class as they debate whom their party's next presidential nominee should be. Allen -- along with Arizona Sen. John McCain and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- remains in the top tier of 2008 Republicans regardless.

Stock options George Allen said were "worthless" have value of $1.1 million
Submitted by crew on 10 October 2006 - 8:46am. George Allen
George Allen's ethical scandal to continues to grow. You will recall that the Associated Press exposed Allen's failure to disclose stock options as required by Senate rules. His excuse was that the options had no value. Bloomberg contradicts the Senator's assertion:
Stock options that Senator George Allen described as worthless were worth as much as $1.1 million at one point, according to a review of Senate disclosure forms and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
The records appear to contradict remarks he made to the Associated Press. "I got paid in stock options which were worthless,'' AP quoted him as saying.
Allen served as a board member of Chantilly, Virginia-based Xybernaut Corp. from 1998 until December 2000 and was awarded options on 110,000 shares during that period. His Senate financial disclosure form for 1999, required for candidates as well as officeholders, doesn't report that he owned the options.
Submitted by crew on 9 October 2006 - 9:22am. George Allen
George Allen is the latest Member of Congress to have ethical problems exposed. An investigative report by The Associated Press has done uncovered a failure by the Senator from Virginia to disclose stock options in accordance with Senate rules:
For the past five years, Sen. George Allen, has failed to tell Congress about stock options he got for his work as a director of a high-tech company. The Virginia Republican also asked the Army to help another business that gave him similar options.
Congressional rules require senators to disclose to the Senate all deferred compensation, such as stock options. The rules also urge senators to avoid taking any official action that could benefit them financially or appear to do so.
Guaranteed that you'll be hearing more from CREW on this revelation.

Sen. George Allen apologized today
for referring to a man of Indian descent as “macaque.” “In no way was it meant to demean him, and I’m sorry if he was offended,” Allen said in a telephone interview. “Let’s give a welcome to macaque here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia,” Allen said in remarks last Friday, referring to S.R. Sidarth, who was born and raised in Virginia.

"When George Allen’s past comes out, he’s finished."
Whispers about Sen. George Allen.
Having grown up in Charlottesville, I’ve heard a lot about Sen. George Allen over the years. We go to the same barber. We lived on the same street. We share some friends and acquaintances. So I hear a lot about him anecdotally. People share stories about how they knew him when, back at UVa or the first time he ran for office. Generally they’re tales of something particularly outlandish or funny that he said or did. The tone of these descriptions is overwhelmingly positive.
Or, at least, they were. The more that time passes and the more bald that Allen’s ambitions become, the sourer that these recollections seem to become. The very people who laughingly looked back on the man have, in the past few months, turned dark when the topic turns to Allen.
What I hear, more than anything else, is this: When George Allen’s past comes out, he’s finished. I’ve then had repeated to me stories about George Allen’s days at UVa that’d make your hair curl. The stories uniformly describe Allen as a frat-boy drunk, a L.A. boy portraying a southerner like a cross-dresser portrays a woman, a racist bully with no interests beyond his own. Are the stories for real? I don’t know—that’s why I don’t repeat them here. ...
It’s none too surprising that some of the stories have started coming out, courtesy of Ryan Lizza and The New Republic. Allen’s own sister, in her biography, describes how he broke her brother’s collarbone, threw the same brother through a plate-glass window, dragged her up the stairs by her hair, held her by her feet over Niagara Falls, and hoped to become a dentist because he liked the idea of being paid to make people suffer. (I’m reminded of the roman à clef written by Del. Dave Albo’s wickedly funny brother, Mike Albo, “Hornito: My Life Lie,” and his depiction of Del. Albo as a teenager. But that’s the topic of another blog entry.)
I’m not particularly interested in whether or not the specific stories of Sen. Allen’s escapades are true, but the portrait that emerges from these stories seems to confirm the impression of Allen as a sociopathic jerk. Lizza’s article may or may not represent the tip of the iceberg of Allen’s past impropriety, but it’s surely just the beginning of attacks on that impropriety.

Their Own Words: George Allen's Attacks On Jim Webb Universally Condemned
Congressional Desk
October 30, 2006
In a desperate attempt to shred Jim Webb’s character one week before the election, George Allen has taken excerpts from various works of fiction authored by Webb and presented them out of context to fool the public into believing Webb does not have the temperament to be Senator. These campaign tactics speak ill of Allen’s own character and further reveal Allen’s pathetic desperation and bullying behavior. Below you will find excerpts from Republicans and Democrats who find Allen’s attacks baseless and appalling:
The Best
GARRETT EPPS, AUTHOR OF “THE SHAD TREATMENT”: ALLEN’S ATTACK IS “DELUSIONAL.” "To attribute something like that to a novel is really insane," Epps said. He's a Richmond native who teaches at the University of Oregon law school and who wrote the definitive Virginia political novel, "The Shad Treatment." "It verges on the delusional," Epps added Friday…Epps finds all this a bit odd. "Saying that you know a writer by what his characters do in a book is ridiculous," he said. "It would be as if I were afraid that Thomas Harris would eat my heart with a nice cabernet because he wrote 'Silence of the Lambs.' " Epps referred to his own novel as another example. "When I wrote 'The Shad Treatment,' it was about 1973 Virginia," he said. "I had a character who was corrupt. Characters who were racist. Who beat up people in parking lots. "Am I corrupt? No. Am I racist? No. Do I beat people up in parking lots? Certainly not." Epps wondered why the campaign bothered because he wondered why anyone was taking all this seriously…He laughed at Allen's references to Webb as a "fiction novelist and Hollywood screenwriter." "Allen needs to look up the form: fiction, novel," Epps said, pointing at the redundancy. "That's hilarious. Has he read a book?" (Garrett Epps, Daily Press, 10/18/06)
JOHN PODHORETZ: ALLEN MAKES ME EMBARRASSED TO BE A CONSERVATIVE. “Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be on the Right. The outbreak of cynical Babbitry on the part of the George Allen campaign in using sentences from novels written by James Webb against Webb makes this day one of those days.”-- http://corner.nationalreview.com/ 5:18 PM, 10/27/2006
LANNY DAVIS, FORMER WHITE HOUSE SPECIAL COUNSEL TO PRESIDENT CLINTON: ALLEN IS DESPERATE. “George Allen put this out because he is desperate. He has no record to talk about and this is the only thing he can do.” [CNBC, On the Money, 10/27/06] ...

Do they know that while George Allen has been in the Senate, he has voted against funding programs designed to improve healthcare benefits for our veterans? And, do they know, that while Allen plans to stand alongside Senator John McCain on Wednesday to tout his veteran’s record, in 2004, Allen was given a rating of “zero” by the Retired Enlisted Association and by the Disabled American Veterans?
Fact #88 -- What Stinks?
Do they know that as Governor, George Allen advocated, at the behest of a powerful corporation, a rotten scheme to import and burn out-of-state medical waste, including hospital gowns, syringes and bones, despite the objections of local residents?
Fact #89 -- Senator Allen, Why Is Nothing Going on Upstairs?
George Felix Allen returned to Dickenson County Technology Park, where, as governor, he pushed for using $350,000 of Virginia tax dollars to build a two-story office building for Nexus Communications. Allen and Nexus boasted that the deal would “initially hire about 130 workers and have a work force of as many as 550” over three years. However, almost ten years later, there is just one problem…There is nothing going on upstairs!
Fact #90 -- Allen… Burns… Firefighters
The Augusta County Firefighters, the “Hot Shots,” were one of many groups of firefighters who flew to Montana to help quell growing wildfires. On their way home after many days of dangerous work, they were confronted in the airport by Republican U.S. Senator Conrad Burns. “See that guy over there?” said Burns, pointing at one of the Hot Shots. “He hasn’t done a [expletive deleted] thing. They sit around. I saw it up on the Wedge fire and in northwestern Montana some years ago. It’s wasteful. You probably paid that guy $10,000 to sit around. It’s gotta change.” But the only person who was getting $10,000 to do nothing was Senator George Allen, who in 2006 received $10,000 in campaign donations from Burns’ PAC.
Fact #91 -- Allen Cares About Corporations, not Virginians
In the first two days of his “listening tour,” Allen visited five major corporations. He has taken a total of $46,000 in campaign contributions from these corporations.
Fact #92 -- Allen Said He Didn’t Care About Affordable Housing Grants
The affordable housing project is made possible by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grants, a program that Allen doesn’t “give a [expletive] about.”
Fact #94 -- Allen Fights for Workers! (Chinese Workers That Is…)
Do Virginians know while George Allen has been telling them he has no time to introduce a bill rewarding U.S. soldiers for fighting bravely in the Global War on Terror (GWOT), he does have time to introduce 15 different pieces of legislation lowering tariffs on household food appliances – made in China!
Fact #95 -- Where Am I? Allen Can’t Remember “The Way We Ought To Go”
George Allen claimed he would only support an increase in the minimum wage if it was coupled with assistance for small businesses, saying at the Virginia Bar Association Debate, the approach was “the way we ought to go.” However, late last night George Allen paradoxically voted for a package of legislation dubbed the “trifecta” bill that was rejected by the Senate. What was absent from the “trifecta” bill? Small Business Provisions.
Fact #96 -- What the FERC!
Do they know of George Allen’s long and sordid, cozy and personally profitable relationship with energy companies, at the expense of consumers?
Fact #97 -- As Oil Companies Fleeced Consumers By Price Gouging, Some In Congress Sided With Consumers to Make The Practice A Crime… George Allen Sided With the Oil Companies
“Do Virginians know that while George Allen was voting for $44 billion in unneeded tax breaks for oil and energy companies and while these companies were making billions in profits, and while consumers were paying record prices for gas at the pump, and while George Allen was being showered with $800,000 in campaign contributions from these oil and energy interests, and when Federal Trade Commissioner Jon Leibowitz said the Commission ‘found price gouging at multiple levels of the petroleum industry,’ George Allen voted to defeat a bill in the Senate that would have made price gouging a Federal crime?” said Webb spokesperson Steve Jarding.
Fact #98 -- “Pro-Life” George Allen’s Dance With Plan B “Morning After” Contraception Pill Manufacturer
“Do Virginians know that while George Allen panders to the far right wing of his party as a staunch ‘pro-lifer’ he accepts funds from, and makes money off a major pharmaceutical manufacturer, Barr Laboratories, whose main product is oral contraceptives, including the over-the-counter Plan B morning-after contraceptive?” said Webb spokesperson Steve Jarding.
